  The Day a Language Died

When Carios Westez died at the age of 76, a language died, too. Westez, more commonly

known as Red Thunder Cloud, was the last speaker of the Native American language Catawba.

Anyone who wants to hear the songs of the Catawba can contact the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., where, back in the 1940s, Red Thunder Cloud recorded a series of songs for future generations. __________ (46) They are all that is left of the Catawba language. The language that people used to speak is gone forever.

We are all aware of the danger that modem industry can cause the world"s ecology (生态).

However, few people are aware of the impact widely spoken languages have on other languages and ways of life. English has spread all over the word. Chinese, Spanish, Russian, and Hindi have become powerful languages as well. __________ (47) When this happens, hundreds of languages that are spoken by only a few die out.

Scholars believe there are around 6,000 languages around the world, but more than half of them could die out within the next 100 years. There are many examples, Araki is a native language of the island of Vanuatu, located in the Pacific Ocean. It is spoken by only a few older *s, so like Catawba, Araki will soon disappear. Many languages of Ethiopia will have the same fate because each one has only a few speakers. __________(48) In the Americas,100 languages, each of which has fewer than 300 speakers, are dying out.

Red Thunder Cloud was one of the first to recognize the danger of language death and to try to do something about it. He was not actually born into the Catawba tribe, and the language was not his mother tongue.__________ (49) The songs he sang for the Smithsonian Institution helped to make Native American music popular. Now he is gone, and the language is dead.

What does it mean for the rest of us when a language disappears? When a plant insect or animal species dies, it is easy to understand what has been lost and to for the balance of the natural word. However, language is only a product of the mind. To be the last remaining speaker of a language, like Red Thunder, must be a peculiarly lonely destiny, almost as strange and terrible as being the last surviving member of a dying species. __________ (50)

  A. Some people might want to learn some of these songs by hearts.

  B. Papua New Guinea is an extremely rich source of different language, but more than 100of them are in danger of extinction ( 灭绝 ) .

  C. However, he was a frequent visitor to the Catawba reservation in South Carcinoma where he learned the language.

  D. These languages don"t have many native speakers.

  E. For the rest of us, when a language dies, we lose the possibility of a unique way of seeing and describing the world.

  F. As these languages become more powerful, their use as tools of business and culture increase.

  Deforestation and Desertification(沙漠化)

The Sahel zone lies between the Sahara desert and the fertilesavannahs(热带大草原)of northern Nigeria and South Sudan. The word sahel comes from Arabic and means marginal or transitional ,andthis is a good description of these semi-arid (半干旱)lands, whichoccupy much of the Western African countries of Mail, Mauritania, Niger, andChad.

Unfortunately, over the last century the Sahara desert has steadilycrept southwards eating into once productive Sahel lands. United Nationssurveys show that over 70 percent of the dry land in agriculture use in Africahas deteriorated over the last 30 years. Droughts have become more severe, themost recent lasting over twenty years in parts of the Sahel region. The sameprocess of desertification is taking place across southern Africa as theKalahari desert advances into Botswana and parts of South Africa

One of the major causes of this desert advance is poor agriculturalland use, driven by the pressures of increasing population. Overgrazing 一 keeping toomany farm animals on the land一 means that grasses and other plants cannot recover, and scarcewater supplies are exhausted. Overcultivation 一 trying to grow toomany crops on poor land 一 results in the soil becoming even less fertile and drier, andbeginning to break up. Soil erosion (侵蚀) follows, and theland turns into desert.

Another cause of desertification is loss of tree cover. Trees arecut down for use as fuel and to clear land for agricultural use. Tree rootshelp to bind the soil together, to conserve moisture, and to provide a habitatfor other plants and animals. When trees are cut down, the soil begins to dryand loosen, wind and rain erosion increase, other plant species die, andeventually the fertile topsoil may be almost entirely lost, leaving only barerock and dust.

The effects of loss of topsoil and increased drought are irreversible. They are, however, preventable. Careful conservation of tree cover andsustainable agricultural land use have been shown to halt deterioration ofsoils and lessen the effects of shortage of rainfall. One project in Kita insouth-west Mali funded by UNDP has involved local communities in sustainablemanagement of forest, while at the same time providing a viable(有活力的)agriculturaleconomy. This may be a model for similar projects in other West Africancountries.

  51.A。 一个__________ 就是一个*台,能够垂直和在空中盘旋 __________直升机。

四个选项分别代入后,9eneratethenecessaryupwardforce(产生必要的向上的动力)比较符合语境,故D为正确答案。

  57.A。 题干:越多的__________ 提供给螺旋桨,那么*台就__________ 越高。

  61.A。 题干:__________ 救生筐不能达到大楼的`每一层,__________ 筐子上的绳子变得不稳定了__________ 一定的长度。

  Tunguska Event

1 A hundred years ago this week, a gigantic explosion ripped (撕裂) open the day y above a forest in western Siberia, leaving a scientific riddle that endures to this day.

2 A dazzling light pierced the heavens, followed by a shock wave as strong as 1,000 atomic bombs. The explosion flattened 80 million trees across an area of 2,000 square kilometers. The fireball was so great that, a day later, Londoners could read their newspapers under the night sky. What caused the so-called Tunguska Event, named after the nearby Podkamennaya Tunguska River, still remains a mystery.

3 Experts suspect it was a rock that, after traveling in space for millions of years, was destined to crash to Earth at exactly 7:17 a.m. on June 30, 1908. This possibility worries scientists. “Imagine an unspotted asteroid (小行星) hitting a significant chunk(块) of land ... and imagine if that area, unlike Tunguska, were populated,” the British science journal Nature commented recently.

4 But no fragments of the “rock” have ever been found. Finding such evidence would be important, for it would increase our knowledge about the risk posed by dangerous Near Earth Objects (NEOs), say Italian researchers Luca Gasperini, Enrico Bonatti and Giuseppe Longo. When the next Tunguska NEO approaches, scientists will have to decide whether to try to deflect (使偏转) it or blow it up in space.

5 However, several rival theories for the Tunguska Event exist. Wolfgang Kundt, a professor at Germany"s Bonn University, believes the Tunguska Event was caused by a massive escape of 10 million tons of methane(甲烷)-rich gas from deep within earth"s crust. Some people hold that the explosion was caused by an alien spaceship crash, or a black hole in the universe.

  Saving a City"s Public Art

Avoiding traffic jams in Los Angeles may be impossible, but the city"s colorful freeway murals(壁画)can brighten even the worst commute. Paintings that depict(描述)famous people and historical scenes cover office buildings and freeway walls all access the city. With a collection of more than 2,000 murals, Los Angeles is the unofficial mural capital of the world.

But the combination of graffiti(涂鸦), pollution, and hot sun has left many L.A. murals in terrible condition. _____(46)in the past, experts say, little attention was given to caring for public art. Artists were even expected to maintain their own works, not an easy task with cars racing by along the freeway.

_____(47)The work started in 2003. So far, 16 walls have been selected and more may be added later.

Until about 1960, public murals in Los Angeles were rare. But in the 1960s and 1970s, young L.A. artists began to study early 20th-century Mexican mural painting_____(48)

The most famous mural in the city is Judith Baca"s "The Great Wall," a 13-foot-high(4-meter-high)painting that runs for half a mile (0.8 kilometer) in North Hollywood, _____(49)it took eight years to complete—400 underprivileged teenagers painted the designs—and is probably the longest mural in the world.

One of the murals that will be restored now is Kent Twitchell"s "Seventh Street Altarpiece." which he painted for the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. _____ (50) Twitchell said, "it was meant as a kind of gateway through which the traveler to L.A. must drive. The open hands represent peace."

Artists often call murals the people"s art. Along a busy freeway or hidden in a quiet neighborhood, murals can teach people who would never pay money to see fine art in a museum, "Murals give a voice to the silent majority," said one artist.

  46._____

  47._____

  48._____

  49._____

  50._____

A.The city trying to stop the spread of graffiti, has painted over some of the murals complete.

B.This striking work depicts two people facing each other on opposite sides of the freeway near downtown Los Angeles.

C.Artists like murals because they like the work of Mexican artists.

D.Now the city is beginning a huge project to restore the city"s murals.

E.The mural represents the history of ethnic groups in California.

F.Soon, their murals became a symbol of the city"s cultural expressions and a showcase for L.A."s cultural diversity.

  1. 红花词

  a. 一类红花:allof the above( 一般在第四项,且没有失手过)。

  b. 二类红花:may, might, can, could, likely, usually, relatively, important, some及其派生词(something, someone, somebody)

  a. 一类绿叶:noneof the above, indifferent(无关紧要的), only

  b.二类绿叶:must,always, every(以及其派生词),each,all, absolutelt, at all

  A级的人员能识别6000个左右的单词和一定数量的短语;

  B级的人员能识别5000个左右的单词和一定数量的短语;

  C级的人员能识别4000个左右的单词和一定数量的短语;

  1.

A petition has to be mailed to the Prime Minisler’s house in London.

  2.

  True B.False C.Not mentioned

(文章第一段)Petitions(*,*书)have long been a part of British political life.Anyone who wanted to change something would get a list oI signatures from people who agreed to the idea and either send them to the government or deliver them personally to the Prime Minister"s house in London.

该斜体结构中的代词them与划线句中与其形成并列结构(either send them……or deliver them……)
